This is a list of some popular and useful open source programs. Not all of the programs listed are technically defined as "open source" (which is software that lets its source code be freely edited), but all of the programs are freely available with no cost to download.

  • Hangman
    Platform:      Linux, Windows
    Description: The classic game of hangman, but this time its a little more difficult.
  • Python Sudoku
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: Sudoku is a challenging number game and has recently become a huge hit.
  • Risk
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: Now you can play this classic board game on your computer.
  • Concentration
    Platform:      Linux
    Description: The classic "match the cards" memory game.
  • GNU Chess
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: A simple chess program (for the Windows version go here).
  • 4st (Forced) Attack
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: A 1 or 2 player game where players try to be the first to connect four pieces.
  • Across Lite
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: A program for those that can't wait until the next newspaper to work another crossword puzzle.
  • Anagramarama
    Platform:      Linux, Windows
    Description: A game where the player takes the given word and makes as many words as possible from that word.
  • Babala
    Platform:      Linux, Windows
    Description: A challenging logic and strategy game.
  • Biniax
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: A fast paced game where the player tries to match colors on a tile with another tile.
  • Casse-tete
    Platform:      Linux
    Description: Casse-tete is French for "head-breaker." This is certainly a fitting title for this puzzle game.
  • Droid Quest
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: A fun game that focuses on logic and strategy as the key to solving challenges.
  • GLPuzzle
    Platform:      Linux, Windows
    Description: A 3D (OpenGL) jigsaw puzzle program.
  • GSoko
    Platform:      Linux
    Description: A version of the game "sokoban," which features a player moving boxes around until all of the boxes are on certain squares. Warning: The game is more challenging than it sounds!
  • MazeSmith
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: This program allows the user to customize a maze and then solve it.
  • Pingus
    Platform:      Linux, Windows
    Description: A strategy game where the player commands penguins to do certain tasks in order to complete the level.
  • GNU Chess
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: A simple chess program (for the Windows version go here).
