This is a list of some popular and useful open source programs. Not all of the programs listed are technically defined as "open source" (which is software that lets its source code be freely edited), but all of the programs are freely available with no cost to download.

Teacher Resources
  • Hippo Campus

    Description: HippoCampus is a project of the Monterey Institute for Technology and Education (MITE). The goal of HippoCampus is to provide high-quality, multimedia content on general education subjects to high school and college students free of charge.
  • Quia.com - Shared Activities
    Platform:      Web
    Description: This collection of shared activities is a great starting point for new users. Here you will find a sampling of activities in more than 150 categories. All of the activities were created by instructors using Quia's tools and templates.
  • Teacher Tube

    Description: TeacherTube officially launched on March 6, 2007. It's goal is to provide an online community for sharing instructional videos that is educationally focused, and provides a safe venue for teachers, schools, and home learners.
  • Google For Educators

    Description: Google provided many free resources the many educators are finding very useful in the classroom….. First you will need a Gmail Account!

    Description: Langue Arts and Math Lessons for students age 5-7.
  • LearingPlanet.com

    Description: LearningPlanet.com focuses on creating learning activities and tools which empower classroom teachers. Search for activities by grade level, subject, or category.

  • National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
    Platform:    WEB
    Description: The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives (NLVM) is an NSF supported project that began in 1999 to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-12 emphasis).
  • GeoGebra
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: GeoGebra is a free and multi-platform dynamic mathematics software for schools that joins geometry, algebra and calculus. It received several international awards including the European and German educational software awards. everyone can be good at it, and it's fun!
  • PBSkids.org - CYBERCHASE
    Platform:      WEB
    Description: CYBERCHASE teaches kids that math is everywhere, everyone can be good at it, and it's fun!
  • Dr. Geo

    Description: An interactive geometry program.
  • Fractal View
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: A program that shows the Mandel and Julia sets of fractals (in 2D).
  • GLFract
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: Another fractal viewer, but this program shows the fractal in three dimensions.
  • Ghost Diagrams

    Description: This program draws interesting patterns using tiles.
  • Tux of Math Command

    Description: This educational game based on the classic "Missile Command" game is a fun way for children to learn to solve simple math equations.
  • Tux Math Scrabble

    Description: This game is based on scrabble, but it uses math equations instead of words.

    Description: Math games for students age 5-7.

  • Celestia

    Description: This free space simulation that lets you explore our universe in three dimensions. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy.
  • Stellarium
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.
  • BKChem

    Description: A program that is used to draw chemicals.
  • GPB Classroom
    Platform:      Web
    Description: GPB Classroom consists of two video series teaching high school college preparatory chemistry and physics. Chemistry: A Study of Matter and Physics Fundamentals provide instructional content delivered through thirty minute video episodes and integrated classroom materials

    Description: The World Factbook provides national-level information on countries, territories, and dependencies.

    Description: The Starfall learn-to-read website is offered free as a public service. Teachers around the country are using Starfall materials as an inexpensive way to make the classroom more fun and to inspire a love of reading and writing.

    Description: Langue Arts games for students age 5-7.

    Description: The focus of the Alice project is now to provide the best possible first exposure to programming for students ranging from middle schoolers to college students.
  • Game Maker

    Description: Game Maker allows you to make exciting computer games, without the need to write a single line of code. Making games with Game Maker is a lot of fun.
  • Jmol
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: A "molecule viewer" written in the Java programming language.
  • JTurtle
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: This program was designed to help younger and more inexperienced programmers learn to program in Java.
  • Pysycache

    Description: Pysycache is a program designed to help young children learn to use a computer mouse.
  • TappyTux

    Description: TappyTux is a fun typing tutor that becomes increasingly more difficult as the player progresses through the many levels.

  • GNU Solfege

    Description: This program is a simple ear training program to help users develop a sense of relative pitch.
  • Tuner

    Description: Tuner is a small Java application that allows the user to tune a variety of musical instruments using their PC.
Toddler Learning
  • G-Compris

    Description: GCompris is a high quality educational software suite comprising of numerous activities and games for children aged 2 to 10.  Computer discovery, math, science, and reading are just a few of the areas address in the suite.
  • Childsplay
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: A suite of games designed for children. Childsplay is very similar to GCompris.
  • A Toddler Game
    Platform:      Linux, Windows, OSX
    Description: This program provides some fun and educational activities for toddlers.
  • Hiyah.net
    Platform:      Windows
    Description: This educational software is made for children 18 months to 4 years of age (or higher for children struggling with language delays due to autism or other causes). The programs are based on high interest subjects, such as nursery rhymes, holidays, and birthday themes.
  • Tux Paint

    Description: Tux Paint is a fun paint program designed for children.
  • BBC Little Animals

    Description: The Little Animals Activity Centre is a fun way for 4-8 year olds to learn and play at home.
