Content Area(s): Middle Grades, Math and Science Macon County School System Math and Science Partnership Project: The Macon County School System, located in rural southwest Georgia, serves approximately 2000 total students. In 2006 - 2007, the school system was awarded a first year MSP grant to provide high-quality professional learning to enhance teachers’ skills in bringing students to higher levels of performance in math and science. This grant was used to increase the knowledge and pedagogical content of an initial group of 54 math and science educators. Columbus State University’s outreach centers partnered with the school system to provide 40 hours of professional development. The Center for Quality Teaching and Learning provided 20-hours of “Mind Bugs” (math content and methods instruction, focusing on previous misconceptions in learning). Science teachers received 20 hours of visits and training at the Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center (life science), the Coca Cola Space Science Center (earth & physical science) and the Columbus Regional Math Collaborative (math connections to physical & biological sciences). In 2007, Macon County was awarded a two year grant to continue the professional learning partnership with Columbus State University. During the 2007-2008 school year, the CSU outreach centers will guide the math and science teachers in the use of Garden Plots, Outdoor Classrooms, and other contextual strategies as real-life settings in which to frame instruction. Professional Learning Teams will continue to work together to increase content and pedagogy and to make data-driven decisions. Middle Grades Educators
