Classroom XXI: An Executive Briefing for School Administrators

The education community is "buzzing" in response to stakeholder demands for "21st century schools," "21st century skills," and "21st century teaching and learning." Understandably, many education leaders feel intense pressure to react to these persistent demands for immediate changes in the schools. School leaders may struggle with the challenges of preparing students to emerge from the schools fully equipped for success in the "21st century workforce." Legitimate questions deserve solid answers as school leaders face the "21st century education challenge." Before taking change-related actions, astute school leaders will seek answers to a plethora of excellent "21st century questions" including:
  • What are 21st century skills?
  • Why are these skills so critical at this point in time?
  • How is our school system doing in equipping our students with 21st century skills?
  • What changes need to be made to ensure that our students are competent with 21st skills?
  • Where will school systems find teachers that are prepared to deliver 21st century instruction?
  • What are the first steps our schools will take to ensure 21st century teaching and learning?
  • What tools and equipment will our teachers need to meet the 21st century education challenge?
  • How much money will preparation for 21st century skills cost our school system?
Classroom XXI is an executive briefing for school administrators. It is a customized professional development opportunity designed to assist school leaders in shaping answers to the "21st century questions." During the pilot phase of this unique training initiative, a highly effective training model emerged. The Classroom XXI model is designed in response to the successes and challenges experienced by school systems that participated in pilot training. Participation in Classroom XXI requires school system leaders to identify a cohort of system and/or school level administrators for participation in a customized five-hour training event. These school leaders work with colleagues to fully understand the challenges, benefits and support structures associated with 21st century education while participating in a series of activities that establish a common framework and language for continued 21st century planning in the school system. Often, the goal of school system leaders who participate in Classroom XXI is to bring all leaders to a coherent understanding of the 21st century challenges that face their school systems. Once the "challenge" is clearly defined and collectively understood, the school system officials are able to move forward with strategic planning in response to the 21st century education challenge.

Because every school system is moving toward transformed 21st century learning environments in unique ways and at different paces, each school system is unique in their progress toward 21st century education. Fortunately, many school leaders have a vision for 21st century learning that has inspired unique paths toward 21st century education. For these reasons, the Classroom XXI experience is customized for each school system at the request of a system-level administrator. Following consultation with designated school officials, a customized training plan is delivered for distribution to identified participants, who will register online for participation in the school system’s customized event.
